You’ve probably heard this motivational phrase more than once. But what if your beliefs about your own intelligence compared to others come down to your gender? A first-of-its-kind study shows that in the college biology classroom, men perceive themselves as smarter, even when compared to women whose grades prove they are just as smart. The study, published April 4 in the journal Advances in Physiology Education , shows that gender greatly impacts students’ perceptions of their own intelligence, particularly when they compare themselves to others.

Katelyn Cooper, a doctoral student in the Arizona State University School of Life Sciences and lead author of the study, has talked with hundreds of students as an academic advisor and those conversations led to this project. The ASU research team asked college students enrolled in a person biology course about their intelligence. Specifically, the students were asked to estimate their own intelligence compared to everyone in the class and to the student they worked most closely with in class.

The researchers were surprised to find that women were far more likely to underestimate their own intelligence than men. And, when comparing a female and a male student, both with a GPA of 3. In addition, when asked whether they are smarter than the person they worked most with in class, the pattern continued. Male students are 3. A previous ASU study has shown that male students in undergraduate biology classes perceive men to be smarter than women about course material, but this is the first study to examine undergraduate student perceptions about their own intelligence compared to other people in the class.

This study shows that women are disproportionately thinking that they are not as good as other students, so this a worrisome result of increased interactions among students. Brownell added that in a world where perceptions are important, female students may choose not to continue in science because they may not believe they are smart enough.

Men, do smart women threaten your masculinity? A new study suggests they might — and that you might not want to date them because of it. In the first part of the study, researchers had male participants read a hypothetical scenario about a woman who, among other traits, had either outperformed the male subject or underperformed him in a math or English course; the men were then asked to imagine how desirable that person might be as a romantic partner.

The participants took what they thought was an intelligence test, and were told that they would soon be meeting someone who had either scored better or worse than them on the test. Put simply: In a hypothetical scenario one in which the man will never meet the woman , men showed greater attraction toward a woman who was smarter than them, but when they are faced with actually meeting a more intelligent woman, they showed less attraction and desire to date her.

The reason, the researchers conclude, has to do with threats to masculinity which are far more acute when the man actually has to meet the woman versus when this woman is merely a hypothetical concept.

The profile types that contained two simple emoticons and redundant emojis, which complemented but did not replace the text, tended to be perceived as more intelligent, compared to the control. The study did have several limitations, including a large imbalance between the number of male and female participants.

Researchers reveal whether intelligence makes your more attractive once and for all. As a journalist – one of those annoying people who picks up on bad grammar, and occasionally, points it out to the offender – I’ve personally always found intelligence to be attractive. For me, there is no bigger mood killer, than a Tinder date who writes: “Your very pretty”. I mean, apart from the blatant creepy undertones, the grammar! It kills me.

So, if I was a betting kind of girl, I would bet intelligence does, indeed, contribute to one’s overall attractiveness: a well-strung sentence can swiftly escalate a 4 out of 10 to a strong 5, at least in my books. And, new research suggests I’m not alone here. Bad killer is my ultimate turn-off.

I have a mini-confession to make: I wrote the Tao of Dating books specifically for really smart people. The writing of the books was precipitated by the endemic dating woes on the Harvard campus as I observed them as an advisor and, earlier, indulged in them as a student. Thanks to an upcoming paper in the Journal of Personality and Individual Differences , there’s now scientific proof that being intelligent makes you more attractive. Researchers from Western Sydney University in Australia asked about adults to rate the desirability of a series of hypothetical people.

The first half of the study focused specifically on heterosexual people, while the latter half of the study was more inclusive of other sexualities. They had to indicate how desirable each person was for a short-term relationship and for a long-term relationship based on descriptions they were given about how intelligent the person is less smart than you, as smart as you, or smarter than you and how physically attractive they are “insufficiently attractive,” “sufficiently attractive,” or “abundantly attractive”.

The first half of the study focused specifically on straight people, yielding some intriguing heterosexuality-specific findings: Men and women alike preferred equally or more intelligent partners when it came to both short-term and long-term relationships. For men, women who were less intelligent than themselves were more desirable for a short-term relationship than a long-term—suggesting straight guys do prioritize intelligence when it comes to getting serious with someone.

Since the intelligence test was invented more than years ago, our IQ scores have been steadily increasing. Even the average person today would have been considered a genius compared to someone born in — a phenomenon known as the Flynn effect. We may have to enjoy it while we can. The most recent evidence suggests that this trend may now be slowing. It may even be reversing, meaning that we have already passed the summit of human intellectual potential.

Can we have really reached peak intelligence? And if that is the case, what can the subsequent decline mean for the future of humanity? That comes at a serious cost. Cave art of ancient humans suggests a surprising intelligence Credit: Getty Images. There are many potential reasons for this brain boost, but according to one leading theory, it was a response to the increasing cognitive demands of group living.

From Australopithecus onwards, human ancestors began to congregate in bigger and bigger groups — perhaps, initially, as a protection against predators, which would have been a serious risk once they began sleeping on the ground rather than the trees. It would also allow individuals to pool resources — helping to spread out some of the risks of living in a changeable environment — and provide shared childcare.

And if you are working on a group activity, like hunting, you need to be able to follow what each member is doing as you coordinate your activities. For humans today, a lack of social understanding causes embarrassment; for our ancestors, it was a matter of life or death.

So much for calling ourselves sapiosexual. The brainy bunch, probably secretly looking into their own dating viability and desireability, surveyed young adults and asked them to rate what they found attractive in a partner: intelligence, easy-goingness, kindness, and physical attractiveness.

The participants were asked how attracted they would be to a potential partner who was more intelligent than 1 percent, 10 percent, 25 percent, 50 percent, 75 percent, 90 percent, and then 99 percent of the population. They were then asked the same question for each of the other three personality traits. However, the study suggests that it may be possible to be too intelligent or too easygoing, with the researchers finding that there was a statistically significant reduction in how attractive intelligence and easygoingness were rated at the 99th percentile, compared to the 90th percentile.

When looking at differences between genders, the findings implied that females value kindness and intelligence in a potential partner more than males. However, overall the differences were small, with the study finding that men and women are essentially similar with respect to how desirable they rate intelligence, physical attraction, easygoingness, and kindness.
